Halvorssen’s Fight for Human Rights

Thor Havlorssen works tirelessly through the day and night to fight the cause. He is the president of the New York based Human Rights Foundation and it is clear he is passionate. Havlorssen is Half-Norwegian, half-Venezuelan and speaks English without an accent. He comes from a background of fighters and leaders. His grandfather was the Norwegian King’s consul and his mother is a descendent of Venezuelan president Cristóbal Mendoza.

Thor Halvorssen understands and appreciates rights and human liberties. His father was tortured in a Caracas prison after exposing corruption within the government and his mother was shot during a demonstration. His work is both fueled by inspiration and tragedy.

He has escaped himself with severe beating in Vietnam and other countries, but he understands the dangers that come with fighting for human rights. The Human Rights Foundation has only a staff of 12 that must work for issues spanning the globe. They work to help political prisoners and other issues of rights violations. Human Rights Foundation currently holds an Oslo Freedom Forum, which has become a human rights staple. Major donors to the cause are PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel and Google’s Sergey Brin. Dissidents from around the world are awards and recognized for their struggles against tyranny.

One of Halvorssen’s current causes is to set the people of North Korea free. He works with great passion an uphill battle. There are so many dictators, injustices, and human rights violations around the world
